NO Wal-Mart in Suisun!

We are appalled to learn that Suisun City is planning to bring a Wal-Mart Super Center to Highway 12 and Walters Road.

Traffic on highway 12 is currently so bad that the state legislature has doubled the fines for anyone getting a ticket there. It is Solano County's version of Blood Alley. Highway 12 is known regionally for the huge number of fatalities that have ocurred there. It makes no sense in our view to bring an estimated 60,000 extra cars and delivery trucks to Highway 12.

Residents picket City HallWal-Mart Super Centers have a reputation for attracting an ovewhelmingly high crime rate. This Wal-Mart will result in unnecessary risks placed on shoppers in the Travis crash zone where it is proposed.

Wal-Mart has a reputation for destroying communites throughout America. The city of Portersville, California is a classic example of what could happen to Suisun (see video link at the end of this page).

Wal-Mart is currently building a Super Center in Fairfield at Mission V11:35 AM 3/5/2008illage. Traffic at that location is expected to be at grade "D" levels. Imagine the impact on our two lane Highway 12 (SR-12) and Walters Road. This will further increase your commute home.

The Solano County Airport Land Use Commission has ruled the project to be an aviation safety hazard in that it will be in a crash zone. Rather than accept that reality Mayor Sanchez and Councilwoman Jane Day have tried to get the Chairman of the commission and veteran pilot, John Foster fired!

The Department of Transportation's Division of Aeronautics,   has weighed in on the matter of crash safety. They stood on the side of the Solano County Airport Land Use Commission which ruled on November 8 the project was inconsistent with the Tavis Airport Land Use Compatability Plan. In a letter to the city they wrote: "We concur with the Solano County Airport Land Use Commission analysis that the project proposed will yield greater density and that will exceed the 300 persons-per-acre established criteria for projects within Traffic Pattern C.."

Say NO to Wal-Mart!Regarding aviation fuel and petroleum pipelines near the site, the Pipeline Safety Trust,   of Bellingham Washington, has written a letter to Travis requesting they come forward and advocate for public safety. They wrote, "After reviewing the available information from Suisun City regarding the proposed construction of a Wal-Mart Supercenter at the corner of Walters Road and State Route 12, along with all applicable pipeline safety regulations, we share [residents] concerns .."

There are a lot of questions and controversy about Wal-Mart's history of promises to provide tax revenue to the cities they reside in. Cities, like Cathedral City, California, have been left saddled with a several million dollar short fall due to their approval of a Wal-Mart Supercenter. Taxpayers in Suisun don't deserve to be stiffed by the decadently wealthy heirs to the Wal-Mart fortune.

The Suisun City Council must reject the Wal-Mart Supercenter or the people of Suisun must take back control of the city's future!
